This past weekend, comedian and singer-songwriter Evan Wecksell came to Millersville University to share some laughs with students. Originally from Long Island, New York, Evan began his comedy career early, performing at venues such as The Downtown and Munchaba Lounge. Shortly after, Wecksell began competing in Long Island’s well-known comedy competition Laff Off. He became a Long Island Laff-Off finalist three times. After releasing his live CD, Live at the Bitter End, Wecksell relocated to Los Angeles, CA in 2005. There, he made his television debut on VH1’s “I Love the 80s 3D.”

This television debut helped Wecksell land many other TV appearances such as “30 Most Outrageous Celebrity Feuds” and E! Television’s “Forbes Celebrity 100: Who Made Bank”. He’s appeared on many radio outlets such as Sirius and the Dr. Demento Radio Show. In addition, his comedic musical career grew as well. Campus Activities Magazine listed Wecksell as one of their “Hot Comedy Acts” in 2009, helping him land over 100 shows. In 2010, Wecksell released his first full-length album “LOL” which included tracks performed live and in the studio.
Wecksell brought his music-infused comedy to the stage of the SMC this past Friday. Opening for him was Millersville’s own Caseem Luck, who told hilariously interesting stories about his past. After Caseem warmed up the crowd, Wecksell came on stage with his guitar and his comedy. His jokes consisted of a mix between stand up and song. He sang songs mocking college stereotypes, popular websites and people you meet out on the town.

In addition, he created a parody of popular Bruno Mars’ song “Just the Way You Are”.Wecksell stated he prefers incorporating music into his comedic performances as it makes the performance less scripted. Certain segments of the show can be more improv than scripted jokes or songs, making each performance original and unique to the specific audience.
Wecksell’s performance included a lot of audience participation. This ranged from audience’s writing on pieces of paper what bother them most in life to the audience shouting out random words to make a mad-lib to a dance competition. The crowd enjoyed the way Wecksell used their suggestions and participation to add to his performance.
