Cultivating the spirit of music within our youth is an important goal that the Lancaster County non-profit organization Music For Everyone has been striving to achieve for the past 10 years. Millersville recently showed support for their cause when multiple university organizations hosted MU Underground, a benefit concert to promote music.
MU Underground was an all-evening event on Friday 18th. There were eight bands at the event, each contributing to the wide range of genres represented on stage. Genres varied between hip-hop, alternative, indie, rock, punk and folk. Bands that performed included Compound Theory, Christopher Grogan, THE, iSail, Cris-B, Hybrid Sessions, The Schenlie’s and Hemlock Street.

The event was a joint effort of WIXQ and the University’s Activities Board. “The planning started in late November”, said WIXQ station manager Curtis Silverwood, “We sent out a registration form on social media and on our website for all local bands to sign up”.
One of the bands in attendance was Hybrid Sessions, a progressive rock band from the greater Scranton area. “We’re here purely for what [MU Underground is] supporting,” said Dillon Nowak, vocalist and lead guitarist of Hybrid Sessions, “We’re not a band that’s really looking for exposure … we’re just a band that loves to play and loves to support music”.
“It’s really awesome,” said John Jones, DJ for WIXQ, “First off, [giving] unknown band the opportunity to play their music is awesome and it’s really cool just to get all different types of music. [And second], and of course the organization that we’re benefitting, Music For Everyone, is awesome because it gets the word out for music education for different programs in schools”.
“The event went really smoothly,” said Silverwood, “there was never a dull moment.”
MU Underground was a success and the event raised $350 for the Music For Everyone organization. To find out more information about Music For Everyone, you can visit their website at musicforeveryone.net.
