The next stage in the 1970 Electric VW Bus Project includes a call for designs for a vinyl wrap that will eventually cover the van. The van is currently stripped and is in the garage ready to be sandblasted. All of the work from welding to the logistics of making it run off of electric power is being done by Millersville students.
The hope of this design contest is the same as for the Bus Project and Made in Millersville, to get students involved and to expose them to new things. Dr. Rene Munoz and Al Unrath are in charge of this project. They stressed that they want to see all types of students submit designs, not just art students.
“I want students to say in the future, ‘I got this idea and I don’t know what to do with it’ and for us to give them the tools to make it happen,” Unrath said.
Unrath also said that his passion for learning outside of the classroom came from his grandmother. “My grandmother said experience is the best teacher.”
This project runs alongside Made in Millersville: A Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity taking place on April 21. Made in Millersville is a student research and performing and visual arts conference.
The designs are due on April 1 and the winner will receive a two hundred dollar prize in addition to the opportunity to see their design driven around campus. More information about this contest can be found at bit.ly./eVWDesign.
